Say hello and let us know that you’re still alive out there!  New posters encouraged to post in here!

Way back in 2006, a few nano-reef.com loyalists created a DIY/hardware centric forum as a supplement to nano-reef’s more livestock oriented approach.  After an initial wave of interest, a couple contests, and more than a few fume fueled plumbing discussions, reeftuners died a quick and silent death, when it’s master was called out of the country indefinitely.
Fast forward to 2009.. We got in touch with the old guard, and with their blessing started work on the website you see here today.

Glassbox is and always has been one of the only places to see all the well designed aquariums and products consistantly, and without the need for countless hassles and hours of forum hunting. It brings a tear to my eye to think that glassbox will be slowing down or even coming to a halt in the near future.  Here's a quote..

"One thing that many people do not know is Glassbox is not my full time job. I have a demanding career in conjunction with the site. Combining the two has been stressful, fun and lead to many lost hours of sleep.  I am fortunate that some opportunities have recently presented themselves and I must make them a priority."

Read the bittersweet story here. Good luck to you Eric!

Although at first a rather shy and easily frightened fish, once it settles in to its surroundings falls into the moderately-aggressive behavior category.

C. multifaciatus is a member of Centropyge, at least for a little while longer. From the photo it’s easy to see how this fish derived its common name: Multi-barred Angelfish.

Slick and sexy canvas buckets that can actually be used to transport water! Buy one here at one of my favorite stores on the planet for that functional functional look.

Finally looks like manufacturers are getting the hint and releasing some good looking kit. Read more about it on reefbuilders.

Since reeftuners is in beta mode right now, and all of you lovely people that are helping me will probably never see what i’m doing behind the scnes, and even more importantly, because i’ll forget what I just did, i’m creating this list of all the new stuff thats getting added.

March 2011 Side Angle

Ah…. good to be back at rt.com! Like comming back home from a very long trip!

Here, I will document my nano-tank build progress. Tank itself will be main tank + sump in one design, and will be made with all starphire glass… Just to get ready, I have finished building my rock structure for the tank.  I had big piece of ceramic rock called Aquaroche hanging around, so I used my trusty hammer to break it up and re-attached it using epoxy putty. Now its sitting in a bucket with fresh water to cure/leech it.

Hello, and welcome to the new new reeftuners.  I want to take this opportunity to thank you for heeding the beta-test call, and to tell you that I sincerely appreciate any effort expended toward helping this site.  I know more than a few of you have endured with a few of my premature tests, but this time it’s the real deal I promise!

Feel free to upload anything you think relevant. At this point I know that the system can handle real information (backups are in place).  All the individual post and feature testing thus far has been mostly successful so I think it’s time to start flexing this site a bit and seeing what it does for the information on it.

I built this puppy to be easier and more enjoyable than a forum, but with more serious project oriented note taking in mind in the true spirit of reeftuners. Thanks again for helping me recreate something that was special to me many moons ago.

Sincerely,Maeda

Just in case you had any technical questions regarding the site, administration has kindly provided this thread. The most frequently asked questions are answered in here.  Any not so frequently and never asked questions can be posed by simply replying to the thread in the section below, and somebody will be with you shortly, to try and solve your problem. Remember, the reeftuners is still in early beta, so there are a few problems.  Please be patient and bare with us; We're working as quickly as we can to create a finished release candidate.

How do I post an image? Image posting can be done in a couple different ways. The most RELIABLE way is using the 'insert image' button and pasting a link to the image in the URL field.

Other methods include using standard html to link the image and BBcode tags in the future, although these methods are kind of a mixed bag right now. I highly recommend using the image insert button.

How do I change my password? The navigation in the top left corner has a button labelled 'Profile'.  Clicking on this button will bring up your profile page where you can change the password (its toward the bottom) Unfortunately right now the site won't allow for user inputted passwords on sign up, but it will allow you to change your password to whatever you want after you log in the first time. If you still have problems contact an admin and they can manually change your password to whatever you want.

Why does my post look strange? The post can look odd for many reasons.  This is still a beta test so keep in mind there are a few kinks to work out, and that these kinks get worked out very slowly.  There is currently only one person working on this thing.  That being said, here a few formatting tips.

  • Avoid posting multiple images in the first post.  A simple title image, and an intro paragraph is more than enough.
  • Additional images can be added by replying to your own post
  • If you'd like to create a line break in a post hit the ENTER key on your keyboard twice.
  • Try to start each post with a headline image, and then enter text below that.
  • Landscape, and square pictures look best.  Portrait style photo's will get squished in the thumbnail view
  • When in doubt call for a medic Maeda.  He can fix things manually until things start working better.
  • Breathe.  This is still a beta.  All the kinks WILL get fixed as we go along!

What are 'My Favorites' and how do they work? Every note is displayed as an individual card on the main page, and each card has a link in the bottom right hand corner labeled 'Favorite'. If you click this link, reeftuners will save the card to your 'My Favorites' page until you clear you browser cache.  If you are logged into your account, it will save the note until you remove it. You can remove favorited notes from your 'My Favorites' page by clicking on the 'Unfavorite' link either on the main page, on 'My Favorites' page, or even on the individual post page.

How do I edit a note? First of all, you can only edit a note that you wrote. You can edit a note by clicking on 'edit' link display beneath the post content on the post's page.  Sometimes a note's edit link will be displayed on the main page, and it will work, however this is a bug and will be removed in future versions of this site.

I created this concept for a nano, just in case I ever decide to go back to the world of tiny tanks.  The light is actually part of the stand and the stand is integrated into the tank, as one unit.  The box in the corner provides the filtration and a much needed area to hide your heater.

Does anybody remember this epic tank?  This is part one of RT’s ongoing series ‘Flashback’. I think you get what these are going to be about. This was, to this day, the greatest AIO tank i’ve seen, and I cried a little when I heard it had crashed.  In the years since this tank, ezcompany has come back with more than a few nice aquariums, but nothing that comes close to this bugger in its heyday.  Sorry ezco.

Ah another month, and a new round of TOTM’s from every forum on the interweb.  Yes, every month great tanks are featured in a multitude of places, but this month, March 2011, we have AJ-Tsin’s wonderful tank on nano-reef.com. Read up about this incredibly nice tank.  It’s been making the rounds and has been featured in other notable places, such as glassbox design, and in my evernote file of inspiring aquariums.

De Divina Proportione, a three-volume work by Luca Pacioli, was published in 1509. Pacioli, a Franciscan friar, was known mostly as a mathematician, but he was also trained and keenly interested in art. De Divina Proportione explored the mathematics of the golden ratio. Though it is often said that Pacioli advocated the golden ratio’s application to yield pleasing, harmonious proportions, Livio points out that that interpretation has been traced to an error in 1799, and that Pacioli actually advocated the Vitruvian system of rational proportions.[2] Pacioli also saw Catholic religious significance in the ratio, which led to his work’s title. Containing illustrations of regular solids by Leonardo Da Vinci, Pacioli’s longtime friend and collaborator, De Divina Proportione was a major influence on generations of artists and architects alike.

After an explosion on a BP oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010 killed 11 people and caused the biggest oil spill in U.S. history, the company’s CEO at the time, Tony Hayward, zoomed in on the implications of his career. He appeared preoccupied with the incident’s impact on BP’s management and, in particular, on himself. About a week after the explosion, Hayward was quoted as saying to executives in his London office, “What the hell did we do to deserve this?” Despite PR coaching, a month later he told reporters, “I’d like my life back.”

Hayward, who was forced to resign in July, had numerous opportunities to acknowledge the bigger picture: the human devastation and public consternation in the Gulf region. But even though BP deployed thousands of engineers to contain the spill, he could not, in public, rise above a 10-foot view; it was as though the crisis were his own personal devil. Hayward repeatedly focused on the small picture – trying, for example, to shift the blame to supplier Transocean, which had run the rig that exploded. His zoom button seemed to be stuck on the closest setting.

The lens through which leaders view the world can help or hinder their ability to make good strategic decisions, especially during crises. Zoom in, and get a close look at select details – perhaps too close to make sense of them. Zoom out, and see the big picture – but perhaps miss some subtleties and nuances.

Zoom buttons on digital devices let us examine images from many viewpoints. They also provide an apt metaphor for modes of strategic thinking. Some people prefer to see things up close, others from afar. Both perspectives – worm’s eye and bird’s eye – have virtues and pathologies. But they should be vantage points, not fixed positions. Leaders need multiple perspectives to get a complete picture. Effective leaders zoom in and zoom out….

Project SUPER8 was my second reef aquarium and my first all DIY tank. I tried to basically recreate my 5.5g tank but make it slightly deeper, and add a sump so I could hide all the nasty equipment I had in my display.  This tank was lit by a 70w MH but in the summer it eventually melted down and took most of the SPS frags with it.  Survivors were transplanted into Project 24.
